Sex Crimes The Sex Crimes Unit is responsible for investigating and reporting sexual assault crimes specifically rape and sodomy and drug facilitated sexual assault.Sex Crimes Detectives respond to incidents when victims report crimes that fit with the unit's description. When the Detective is unable to respond, the District Officer is responsible for the initial investigation and report preparation. The District Officer will advise the victim to expect contact from a Sex Crimes Detective at a later time. Victims and citizens may also contact the Sex Crimes Unit directly by calling the number to the right. Victims are encouraged to call 911 to report sexual assaults in order for them to receive the most effective police response regardless of the time of the call. An important component of the Sex Crimes Unit is the collaboration with the YWCA St. Louis Regional Sexual Assault Response Team (SART). SART is contacted on sexual assault cases involving victims over 14 years of age. The advocate is able to be a supportive and informational resource to the victim helps to answer questions. Specially trained prosecutors assigned to the Office of the Circuit Attorney are in place to address sexual assault cases brought to them by the Sex Crimes Unit Detectives. The Victim Services Unit of the Office of the Circuit Attorney is also an important partner to assist the needs of victims in cases that move forward through the court process.
